The Sting allowed the Morris Area Tigers to claw their way to a second place ranking in the West Central South Conference standings as they would lose in their home finale 3-1 Friday night at Espeland Gymnasium.

The Tigers (10-2, 17-6) fell just two games short of the conference championship as the Benson Braves would finish the conference season with a perfect 13-0 record.

In YME’s first meeting with Morris Area, the Tigers would also prevail, 3-1 in their meeting back on Sept. 17 in Morris.

Sensational sophomore, Emily Baker, would lead the Sting (7-5, 14, 11) with 14 kills, four ace-blocks and 17 digs.

Senior cornerstone, Aimee Johnson would add 12 kills to YME’s losing effort as sophomore setter Courtney Hinz set 35 assists and junior Mariah Skjefte attempted to hold up the defense with 14 digs.

With season records subjugated to memory the Sting arose in the Section 3A volleyball tournament seedings. The Sting received the third-seed behind two-seed Morris Area and top-ranked Benson.

The Sting will act as the host team Friday night (7:30 p.m.) as they face up-river rival Montevideo, who holds the six-seed, at Morris.

YME defeated the Thunder Hawks in their last meeting 3-1 at Montevideo.

If the heavily favored Sting escape Morris with a win by beating Montevideo they would face the winner of the match between the two-seeded Morris Area and the seven-seeded Minnewaska Area on Monday, Nov. 2 in Montevideo.

Buckle in, Sting fans, the volleyball team is widely considered a dark-horse in the heavily balanced Section 3A. Peaking at the right time, YME has higher seeded teams in the Section going on up-set alert.
