Lena Borghild (Enestvedt) Homme was born on August 17, 1916, in South Sacred Heart Township, Renville County,  to Theodor and Lena (Kravik) Enestvedt. Lena grew up on the family farm and graduated from Renville High School in 1934 and from the Renville Teacher Training Department the following year.  She taught country school in Renville County in two different schools at the time when teachers were paid $45 to $60 a month and had to pay $20 for room and board.
Lena married Peter Homme at Opdal Lutheran Church on July 2, 1938.  To this union three children were born: Truman of Spicer, John of Rochester, and Marjorie Sunvold of Sacred Heart. Lena returned to school and graduated from Mankato State College in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.  She earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from St. Cloud State and was working on a Doctorate in Language Development when she retired from teaching in 1979. She taught in Wood Lake, Danube and finished her teaching career in Sacred Heart.
She had a wide range of interests outside education including cooking, her Norwegian heritage, her faith, and still holds the Renville County Women’s record for the softball and basketball throw. Many were her artistic interests including needlework, sewing, making teddy bears giving each one a unique name, wall hangings, and quilt making. She was a master quilter and was often asked to teach quilting to a family member or a group. Each child and spouse got a marriage quilt and one commemorating their 25th anniversary.  Each grandchild got a quilt for their high school graduation and one for when they married. “Barns in the Family”, which won a 1st place ribbon at the Minnesota State Fair was created for grandson Jim’s high school graduation.  Together they designed it to represent all the barns in Jim’s family.  Each square showed the design of the barn, indigenous trees and flowers, and a numbered mailbox. There are many other elements of significance to Jim’s interests and heritage. Some of the family quilt names are Angus – Royalty, Cream of Wheat, Country Caprice, Apple Bars, Building Blocks, Great Grandmother's Fan, Straight Furrow, A Family Gathering Place, Trip Around the World, Sunshine and Shadows, Cabins by the Lake, Picket Fences, Corn Country, Grandmother's Flower Garden.
Her husband, Peter, preceded Lena in death in 1983, and also preceding her in death were her parents, 4 brothers, and 5 sisters.  Lena is survived by her sons, Truman (Rebecca) of Spicer and John (Martha) of Rochester, daughter Marjorie (Roger) Sunvold of Sacred Heart, grandchildren Greg (Sue) Sunvold, Janelle (Dan) Palmer, Dan (Tracie) Sunvold, Kristin (Bill) Schmidt, Cynthia (Chad) Foesch, Karin (Dan) Bonnema, Jay (Becky) Homme, Jim (Kirsten) Homme, Peter (Serena) Homme, and great-grandchildren Elizabeth (Paul) Schreiner, Andrew Bonnema, Caleb, Ethan, Leah, and Rebekah Sunvold, Jacob, Matthew, and Nathan Palmer, Savannah, Daniel, and Samuel Sunvold, Becca and Hanna Schmidt, Justin and Courtney Foesch, Elizabeth, Emily, Justin, Ashley, Andrew Homme, Kathryn, Jackson, Natalie, and Sarah Homme, Savannah and Veronica Homme.
