Mavis Starr, 86, of Cando, ND, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND.
Services were held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Cando Lutheran Church, Cando, ND. Interment will be at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando, ND in the spring.
Mavis Eleanor Marilyn Johnson Starr was born August 5, 1925 to Menus and Minda (Martinson) Johnson at Perth, ND. Mavis attended the Monroe Township School for eight years. She graduated from Perth High School as Valedictorian in 1944. She then attended classes at the Minot State Teachers College and returned to teach at Oxford and Ellsworth Township Schools. She married Glenn Starr at Rolla, ND on January 25, 1946. They lived in several locations in North and South Dakota where Glenn was engaged in elevator construction. In 1950 they began farming in Rolette County. In 1957 they bought their farmstead in Crocus Township, Towner County, ND. They lived there until 1976 when they built their home in Cando, ND. She was a member of Cando Lutheran Church.
Mavis is survived by her children: Ken (Sandy) Starr of Minot, ND; Carol (George) Gerlach of Granite Falls; Jerry (Suzanne Schweig) Starr of Grand Marias; Mari Jo (Randy) Parker of Cando, ND; stepson: Donald (Gloria) Starr of Clackamas, OR; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glenn Starr; brothers Maurice (Bud) Johnson and an infant brother.
