Underdog Yellow Medicine East had the score tied at halftime, but Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial outscored the Sting 50-25 in the second half enroute to a 83-58 victory in the first round of the Section 3AA-North Tournament played Saturday in Lake Crystal.

Devon Dyrdahl scored 16 points and had six rebounds for YME, which ends the season with an 8-15 record. Elliot Carmany added 12 points, and Adam Savariego had nine points, five assists and five steals.

“It’s going to take a while for it to set in that it’s over,” said YME head coach Jake Suter following the game. “But we’re starting on next year today, we’re going to have our younger guys practice right up until the State Tournament. We’re going to have some fun and get those guys to play, because with losing nine seniors this year, you’ve got a lot of roles to fill on a team.”

The Sting improved on their win total from a year ago by two wins this season and played consummate ‘team-first’ basketball throughout the year.

“There really wasn’t just one guy this year. It was five, six and sometimes seven guys going out and doing all that they could,” said Suter. “This season required a team effort and we got it... I know the coaches and the seniors were hoping for a couple more wins, but we were right there almost every game.”
