  • The sixth annual Fine Arts Celebration will run from April 2-May 5 at Southwest Minnesota State University.



    Vocal and instrumental concerts, theatre productions, readings, student music videos, student writing, art displays, forensics presentations, costume making and more are on the schedule.

  • The sixth annual Fine Arts Celebration will run from April 2-May 5 at Southwest Minnesota State University.
    Vocal and instrumental concerts, theatre productions, readings, student music videos, student writing, art displays, forensics presentations, costume making and more are on the schedule.
    “We want to highlight our talented students and faculty,” said Dr. John Ginocchio, director of bands at SMSU and the event coordinator. “We’d like to invite people from all over the region to come and attend as many events as they’d like, and enjoy the fine arts offerings we have here at SMSU.”
    Several ongoing events will take place, including an SMSU faculty art exhibit, a jewelry exhibit, a display of instruments from around the world and a senior art exhibit.
    Most events are free, and all are open to the public. Events with an admission fee are noted in the schedule that follows. Other highlights include (see schedule for times and locations):
    Several readings are planned, including English professor Dr. Elizabeth Blair, April 4; English Professor Dr. Susan McLean, April 11; and creative writing students, April 18.
    Concerts include: Southwest Minnesota Orchestra’s annual Children’s Concert, April 3; Jazz Ensemble, April 16; SMSU/Community Concert Band, April 19; and Concert Choir, Men’s Glee Club and Bella Voce, April 26.
    Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps will be performed April 12-14, and 20-22 on the Mainstage in the SMSU Theatre.
    Students play a big part in the Fine Arts Celebration. Students will create theatre costumes from a mysterytime period during the Fashion Runway competition April 4; there will be a student recital April 10; student-created music videos will be shown April 17; senior art students will display their graduation projects April 21; seniorspeech communication seminar poster presentations will be April 23; forensics competitors will give their presentations at the Spring Forensics Showcase April 24; Take 2 Improv show will be April 25; student-directed scenes willtake place April 27; and the Drama Club’s annual Playwriting Festival is April 28.
    Art Professor Dr. Pat Brace will give a presentation on her sabbatical trip to England on April 23.
    A reception for the Whipple Scholarship winner will be April 5. A reception for the senior art graduation projects and exhibitions will be April 21.
    The Fine Arts Celebration issponsored by the Fine Arts and Communication Department, the Creative Writing Program and the English Department.
