YME 6, MACCRAY 2
Yellow Medicine East got their first win of the season at their home opener Tuesday against MACCRAY at Richter Field.
The Sting held tentatively to a 2-1 lead going into the fifth with starter Austin Thorstad on the mound. The Sting looked like they were in trouble, with MACCRAY loading the bases with no outs. But after surrendering just one run, Thorstad got out of the inning with a double-play ball that was handled by Brandon Grund and ended the MACCRAY threat.
The Sting then blew open the sixth inning with four runs. Adam Koepke broke the 2-2 tie for YME when he doubled in Aaron Zieske. Ryan Reishus later added a double in the frame that knocked in Koepke and courtesy runner Conor Christensen.
The Sting are now 1-1 on the season following a season-opening loss to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton last Tuesday.
“I’m happy with how our kids stuck with it,” said YME head coach Trevor Schulte following the game. “There were times, especially in the fifth inning where we could have collapsed. But Austin (Thorstad) made some big pitches that inning and we got a double-play ball, that was huge. It kept it at a 2-2 game.”
Jake Sharkey worked the sixth and seventh on the mound to earn the win in relief Thorstad.
Riley Aeikens drove in both runs for MACCRAY (0-2) with a double in the first and fielder’s choice in the fifth.
Aaron Zieske, who should get the start on the mound for YME in their conference opener on Thursday at Montevideo, batted 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI for the Sting.
Said Schulte, “Later in the game we got some timely hits which was good to see. It looks like we have a little confidence now and that’s when you get those hits. And it’s contagious.”
The Sting will face conference rival Montevideo Thursday. Recently they Sting and ThunderHawks have battled it out in big games both in last season’s high school baseball and in Legion play.
But for now, Schulte’s proud of what he saw from his team Tuesday.
“MACCRAY’s a good baseball program. They’ve had a lot of success... A State title, I think, two years ago. There one of teams we’re going to see in the Section so this game was huge for us.”
