With the match tied 3-3 the Yellow Medicine East tennis team gathered in a knot around their coach by the fence surrounding the tennis courts. Carter Iverson and Brandon Repsher were still battling it out.

Iverson and Repsher were YME’s last hope for a win in doubles play: a win that would secure the team a conference and section victory. The match wore on. Even the exhibition matches had finished. It stretched over two hours.

The duo, though, wouldn’t be able to hold on and let a 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0 match slip away to Benson’s Aaron Szczur and Chad Clark.

“The boys and I knew coming into today it was going to be extremly close and we were just hoping to tip it in our favor—but boy, was it close,” said YME head coach Jeff Lalim following the marathon match.

Tuesday’s match kicked off a four-match home stand for the Sting with heavy conference and section implications.

Said Lalim of his team Tuesday, “It’s fun to watch them play. They’re always trying and they’re competitive. We’ll be in it against every team we play this year. It just fun to see these guys get better and more agressive as their knowledge of the game grows.”
    The Sting face MACCRAY Thursday.
