A luckless seven-run third inning doomed Yellow Medicine East as Renville County West sprinted out for a 9-6 victory Monday night in Danube.

The Jaguars concentrated six of their 10 hits on the explosive third inning with Steph Wersal, Molly Elliot, Morgan Zaske, Mollie Thompson and Nora Kronlokken knocking in RBIs.

Prior to the Jaguars half of the third, Angie Scheffler deadlocked the game at 2-2 drilling a two-run homer. Scheffler added a triple to go 2-for-4 with three RBIs on the night.

The Sting totaled 18 hits in the loss. Mollie Nielsen went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the game, while Courtney Hinz batted 3-for-5.

Thankfully, for the Sting, this loss comes against a non-conference opponent. Yet, it is their fifth loss in six tries against teams outside the West Central Conference South.

The Sting return home Thursday for a conference tilt against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City. A win will keep the Sting in the conference title hunt and maintain a tie for the conference lead with Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta. A loss would knock the Sting down to a tie for second place in the conference with ACGC.

Yellow Medicine East moved into a tie for the West Central Conference South lead outlasting Montevideo in a 5-4 nail-bitter Thursday in Granite Falls.

With the win and an Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City loss, the Sting moved into the conference lead and improved to 6-1 in the conference and 6-5 overall. Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta shares the conference lead with the Sting with an 8-1 record in the conference and a 9-1 mark overall.

On Thursday, both the Sting and ThunderHawks put up all their runs in the first three innings. It became a pitchers duel after that with YME’s Allie Trudel and Monte’s Ashley Hoehne combining for eight scoreless innings.

Trailing 3-2 after the top of the second inning, Nena McCalla hit a one-out, two-run single to right-center to put the Sting up 4-3. One more run would cross home plate in the second on a Thunder Hawks' error.

Trudel pitched a complete game allowing just two earned runs and no walks, while striking out four.
