  •     Donald James Howell, Jr.,  55, a member of the Upper Sioux Community, died Saturday, May 6, 2012, at his residence.
        Funeral services were held on Saturday May 12, at  the Wing-Bain Funeral Home Chapel in Granite Falls. Burial was in Doncaster Cemetery followed by a lunch at the Upper Sioux Multi-Purpose Building.    .
        Donald James Howell, Jr. was born June 6, 1956 at Fort Riley, Kansas, to Irene (Ironheart) and Donald Howell Sr. As a child he lived with his family on many U.S. Army bases throughout the United States and in Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. The family returned to Granite Falls in 1972. Donald attended high school in Granite Falls and continued his education at Southwest State University in Marshall, during the late ‘70s. He married and later divorced Lecia Fjerkenstad from Redwood Falls. He lived in the Twin Cities for a short time and also lived in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1988 – 1990.
        Donald was employed as a cook, bartender, blackjack dealer, Card Department Manager and most recently The Poker Room Supervisor at Prairie’s Edge Casino. He enjoyed many things in life, including shooting pool, listening to rock & roll music, caring for his plants, his home and his yard. He loved his family very much and enjoyed family gatherings, birthdays, parties and holidays. Don was a kind hearted man and was especially fond of his nieces and nephews. His home was always open to them and anyone that wanted to visit.      Surviving family includes his father Donald Howell, Sr; his brother Herbert Howell, Sr; his sister Sharon (& Ron) Odegard; nephews Alvin Howell,  Herb Howell Jr; Adrian Howell, Charles Howell and Wade Odegard; his niece Samantha Odegard; 1 great nephew; 4 great nieces; aunts Marlys Ironheart, Lillian Ironheart-Smith and Marlene Ironheart; many cousins and extended family.
        He was preceded in death by his mother Irene (in July of 2011); a brother Alvin; a sister Carole Jean; paternal grandparents James and  Martha Howell; maternal grandparents Herbert and Bessie Ironheart; 3 uncles; 4 aunts and 2 cousins.
        Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Granite Falls was in charge of arrangements.
