State ‘A’ Track and Field meet
(Hamline Univ., St. Paul)
Five Yellow Medicine East athletes competed this Friday and Saturday at the Class A Boys State Track and Field meet held at Klas Field on Hamline University’s campus in St. Paul.
Over the weekend YME sophomore sprinter Jacob Pederson would place sixteenth in the 200m, while the YME boys 4x800m relay team—comprised of sophomores Coltyn Schuler, Isaac Rillo and Jacob Carroll and senior Adam Savariego—placed seventeenth.
“We’re pretty proud to have two events represented at State,” said Yellow Medicine East head track and field coach Scott Jans. “It was a successful end to the season. The kids had fun, they got to have some great experiences and they competed well.”
Prized sophomore sprinter Jacob Pederson admitted to be somewhat awe-struck on walking into Klas Field. “I didn’t expect that many people there,” he said.
Seasoned senior Adam Savariego shared Pederson’s reaction. “It’s huge. There’s so many people. And everybody’s good there. I felt a little out of place,” said the senior with a chuckle.
But Savariego, his team and Pederson proved they belonged with strong performances. The 4x800 team clocked a 8:46.34, only about 48 seconds behind state title winners Medelia/Truman. Meanwhile, Pederson ran a 23.16 in the 200m, just over eight/tenths of a second behind state champ Mike Whitney of Breckenridge.
Pederson’s first reply on his performance: “It was a great experience. Now when I get back there next year I can use that experience and hopefully place next year.”
With four of the five athletes qualifying for state being sophomores, Jans is already making plans for next year.
“We have Jacob for two more years—he’ll get stronger. And just a really good bunch of sophomores, throw Trey Cox into the mix and maybe we get a few more kids out for track next season and we’re looking pretty good.”
For Savariego, the experience is his last as a star athlete at YME. Next year he’ll be at Bemidji State University where he plans on majoring in either business or accounting. He was a leader throughout his career at YME. He organized extra Saturday morning practices for his 4x800m relay team. He told all those sophomores how good they could be until they believed it.
“I?didn’t expect us to go to State at the beginning of the year. We joked about it. Then by the end of the year I wasn’t surprised after we made it through Sections. I was thrilled to make it, but I wasn’t surprised... Yeah, I guess it was a great way to end my senior year.”
