G.F. 3, Sacred Heart 2
The lights shined late Friday night illuminating Richter Field so it could be seen from a distance as summer insects and the Kilowatts gathered in the night. The score board was dark, but there was little doubt who won. If it had been a loss, it would have been expected that the home town lights would have been extinguished far sooner.
The Kilowatts had their way with Willmar and notched their first post season victory. Their next would come a couple of days later.
It was much too late for post game quotes as the towering field lights, winged insects and the Kilowatts buzzed under the heavy July night. “No quotes now, right?”
“It’s all off the record... That’s the rule.” Regardless of what was said, it was how it was said. Swagger was being restored.
Manager Mike Richter has been trying to convince his team all season that they were the type of team that could go on a post season tear. As sodium lights fought the deepening night it seemed as if they were beginning to believe him.
On Sunday in a tight 3-2 victory that knocked Sacred Heart out of the playoffs they proved it and ended Sacred Heart’s run of four straight years at the State Tournament.
The Kilowatts never trailed in the game. Tyler Kanten held off a final Sacred Heart rally from the mound allowing just one run after loading the bases with one out in the ninth.
The Kilowatts two aces, Cody Fruin, who started the game, and Kanten, combined to give up just two runs on four hits.
“We’re playing confident,” said Mike Richter after Sunday’s game. “We’re a dirty young team. That’s a lot of it: just having the confidence to go out there and let the game come to you.”
Sunday’s win puts Granite Falls in the Region Playoffs for the first time since 2007.
They’ll play for Region seeding on Wednesday night in Raymond against the Raymond Rockets, who have been the leaders of the Corn Belt League this season.
A win will put them up against Bird Island in Bird Island on Friday. With a loss, they’ll play a team to be determined in Bird Island on Saturday.

The Kilowatts staved off elimination Friday night thanks in part to a pair of two-run doubles by Dylan Lindstrom and a home run by Jake Suter that sparked a 12-5 victory at Richter Field against the Willmar Rails.
Granite Falls scored in every inning but the third and owned a 7-0 lead before the Rails struck for five runs in the seventh.
Lindstrom collected a third of the Kilowatts’ nine hits and doubled in two runs in both the fifth and eighth innings. Suter homered to left to lead off the fourth and Tyler Kanten knocked in another two runs.
Andrew Walters worked into the seventh and struck out six while giving up five hits and five runs — two earned — to get the win. Kelly Siverhus kept the Rails off the scoreboard for the final 2.1 innings.
