Watch out race fans, here comes Yellow Medicine East. The Sting boys’ cross country team posted their best finish of the season Tuesday capturing third place at the Canby/Minneota/Lincoln Invitational at Canby Golf Course.
“It was a huge meet again for us. It’s the best boys finish (at Canby) that I can remember,” said head coach Jim Ford after the meet.
Jacob Carroll again led the team, as he has for the past two years, and notched his best placing of the season coming in fifth with a disproportionate time of 21:01. His time’s disproportionate, because after the first three runners in the race, the rest of the field was misdirected on the course and ran what Ford thought was about an extra half mile.  All placings remained correct, but the remainder of the field after the top three had times that were at least four minutes worse than what was expected.
Though Carroll’s rise this season has been extraordinary, Ford said the key to the team’s success Tuesday was the rest of his varsity roster.
That pack, led by Isaac Rillo matched each other step for step much of the race and crossed the finish line in succession. Rillo broke away down the stretch to finish nineteenth—his best finish of the year—while Sergey Schuler, Clint Thomas and Austin Thomas came piling in behind him in twenty-second, twenty-third and twenty fourth places respectively.
“We were real pleased with the boys and finishing third—that was our hope,” said Ford. “Murray County Central had beaten us in Marshall last week, so finishing ahead of them was one of our goals.”
The Sting boys team scored 93 points at the meet  while MCC came in fourth with 113.
Marshall and Canby finished first and second, respectively, in both the boys and girls varsity races.
Only Allison Carmany and Morgan Field suited up at this meet for the YME girls. They would cross line only 14 seconds apart, with Field placing thirty-third and Carmany thirty-fourth.
Ford expects to have a full girl’s team at the MACCRAY/RCW meet this Thursday.
“The kids are working hard on Fridays and Saturdays. We’re running harder than we have for a long time, but these kids are older and now they’re having some success,” said Ford. “You know, we put these workouts out there and they’re not just jogging through them and going through the motions—they’re running as hard as they can.”
The Sting are now coming down the backstretch to their home meet on Thursday, Sept. 27. They run at MACCRAY/RCW this Thursday before a meet in Ortonville on Monday, then they turn for home.
