Montevideo 35, YME 20
Yellow Medicine East may have missed out on their best opportunity for a win this season as the Sting exited homecoming week with a 35-20 loss at the hands of previously winless Montevideo Friday night at Volstead Field.
With the State title and runner-up teams from 1986 and ‘87 in attendance, it was almost hoped that excellence might someway travel by osmosis through the crisp September air to ordain the Sting and invoke for just a short time memories of past dominance. But such things rarely happen, if they happen at all.
So, on Friday night a pair of winless teams met with Montevideo outlasting the Sting to dim their homecoming glory.
A 14-point second quarter by the ThuderHawks proved the difference in the West Central Conference clash. Before the start of that quarter the Sting trailed by a one point margin, 7-6. As they jogged into the lockerooms, hope for the home fans was dashed; seeing this game as a repeat of the Sting’s past three losses, with YME now down 21-6.
In the tird quarter both teams went scoreless before trading two touchdowns a piece in the fourth before the clock ran out and YME’s homecoming ended.
Logan Knoshal rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns to lead Montevideo. Meanwhile, Jake Bednar and Spencer Sulflow also scored on the ground for the Montevideo, while Jordan Thompson threw a TD to Austin Hiepler, who caught 2 passes on the night and totaled 117 yards receiving.
Austin Vikander played most of the game at quarterback and tossed two touchdown passes for the Sting, one to Nathan Anderson and the other to Kolten Anderson. Trey Cox carried in YME's lone rushing score of the game, while Jacob Pederson led the Sting with 93 rushing yards.
Defensively the Sting were led by sophomore defensive end Tyson Velde who wrapped up five tackles and a sack.
The Sting are now 0-4 on the year and in the conference and are preparing to travel to Paynesville this Friday.
