The Yellow Medicine East girls' tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Section 3A tournament with a 6-1 win over Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd Monday in Granite Falls.
The No. 7 seed Sting advanced after all six of its points came in straight sets. The Sting will now meet No. 2 Redwood Valley at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Redwood Falls.
Keaunna Hammer and Sandy Bartels paired to blank their opponent in both sets at 3-doubles for YME. Also winning 6-0 in a set during their wins for YME was Danielle Clark at 2-singles and Leah Gluth at 4-singles.
Head coach Steve Barber is confident in his team chances Thursday. "We really like our chances with Redwood as we match up very well. During the season we lost 5-2 but had several close matches. We've been in this exact situation before and came out on top."
The Sting have settled on a lineup that features Jordan Glad and Danielle Clarke at No. 1 and No. 2 Singles, then Rachel Christensen and Leah Gluth at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. In doubles Britanna Raddatz and Jordan Trotter lead things off with Allie Trudel and Anna Posch at No. 2 Doubles and Keaunna Hammer/Sandy Bartels at No. 3.
Said Barber, "We've made so much improvement the last two weeks it's showing in our confidence level. There were some some great performances by our players in the conference tournament. Particularly in doubles that shows we've improved."
As for a possible meeting with tennis power St. James, Barber said, "Believe we have a great shot at making the finals in section this year. St. James is the state ranked favorite and fortunately for us is on the other side of the bracket."
