  • The Minnesota Council on Economic Education (MCEE) will honor Ms. Nicole Linscheid at its annual EconFest celebration on November 8, 2012 at the 3M Innovation Center in Maplewood. Ms. Linscheid will receive the 3M Innovative Educator Award which recognizes educators who approach the teaching of economics with creativity at the elementary and secondary levels. She will receive the second place award in the elementary division.
Ms. Linscheid is a teacher at Clarkfield Area Charter School. In selecting the winning teachers, judges considered innovation in approach, emphasis on basic economic concepts, ease of replication, and assessment of student learning.
In Ms. Linscheid's award-winning learning activity, Students read Lemons and Lemonade: a Book about Supply and Demand, stopping at each section to discuss the economic concepts (goods, services, income, expenditures, gross profit, net profit, and market) and to predict what will happen next for the girl in the story who is opening a lemonade stand. The students then choose an occupation created by the teacher that simulates opportunities to earn an income. During the simulation, the students also have expenses and, as an incentive, are able to purchase services (such as homework coupons) from the profit they make.
Ms. Linscheid will receive $500 during the award ceremony for her outstanding achievement.
