  • Clarkfield couple grows a whopper

  • After pleasantries, Elaine Coubal points out Frank and Mary Lou Miller’s house on 13th Ave. in Clarkfield.

“They’ve got a 90 pound watermelon over there.”

“90 pounds!? What’s a 90 pound watermelon even look like?” asks Elaine.

Frank will tell you it’s bigger than his 10-year-old grandchild. And of course there’s pictures to prove it.
Mary Lou says the couple has always had a large garden. And it sits like a postage stamp in the corner of their vast back yard. But this is the first year they’ve tried watermelons.
The vine they grew produced monsters. Five watermelons grew. Two weighed over 45 pounds. One 66 pounds. Then there’s the grandchild-diminutivizing-granddaddy that requires a back brace to lift: Two feet, three inches long—three feet, four inches around and 90 pounds.
Mary Lou and Frank said the 66-pounder was delicious. And the 90-pounder seems destined for the same fate. By the way, the world record watermelon, grown in 2005, in Arkansas, weighed 268.8 pounds.
“It’s fun,” says Mary Lou. “I think it’ll feed all the kids and grandkids. And we just had to show somebody.”
