  •     My name is Sarina Otaibi, and I am running as a write-in candidate for the Ward 1 seat on the city council. I am a 26 year old who recently moved to the city of Granite Falls. I became the 5th generation of women in my family to graduate from Yellow Medicine East High School in 2005. My grandfather, Melvin Gillespie, and grandmother, Gay Gillespie, farmed this land surrounding Granite Falls. My mother, Mary Gillespie, who recently opened up a local business in downtown Granite Falls as well as a Guest House for visitors, grew up in Granite Falls.
Why did I move back to Granite Falls? It is home for me, and I want to see this city thrive. I love living in Granite Falls because of its rich heritage and history, its supportive community, and its beautiful setting along the Minnesota River.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Historic Preservation. I currently work for Clean Up the River Environment as their program organizer.  I am a volunteer and an active member of all of the following nonprofit local community organizations: Granite Falls Historical Society (board member), Granite Falls Riverfront Revitalization (co-chair), and the Granite Area Arts Council (member). I spend my time renovating and preserving the old North Church to turn in to my home, kayaking and hiking when I can, attending various local events in the area, and visiting and shopping at our area’s historic downtowns.
I am running for city council to serve and work for the citizens of Granite Falls. I believe that I will be able to offer a different and new perspective as we invest in the future of Granite Falls. I would appreciate your support and vote on November 6th.
