Yellow Medicine East’s winless season was drawn to a close Tuesday night with a 42-6 loss to Minneswaska in the first round of the Section 5AA football playoffs.
The No. 2 seeded Lakers made quick work of the Sting; taking a 21-0 lead into halftime.

First, Jack Schultenover scored with a 19-yard run. Then the Lakers went to the air, with Jake Amundson pulling in a 64-yard touchdown pass from Austin Ostrander. Just a few possessions later Minnewaska capped the first half as Sam Long scampered 11 yards for another score.

The second half went much as the first had. The Lakers would score from 64 yards out to start the half on a Greg Helander run.

The lone bright spot for the Sting came in the third quarter as Nathan Anderson hauled in a 40-yard scoring strike from Blake Lindstrom to give the Sting their lone score of the night.

In an interview last week, YME head coach Mike Gaffaney praised Anderson saying, “He’s really a reflection of the senior class. He’s not the biggest, or the fastest kid, but no body works as hard.”

This was the second game in as many weeks that Anderson and Lindstrom recorded the Sting’s lone touchdown.

Said Gaffaney, “For all the things that have gone wrong this season, this team has stayed positive. They’ve kept working in practice and haven’t quit. They made a promise to each other to not quit and they’ve kept that promise.”

Morris/Chokio-Alberta finished up an undefeated regular season with a blowout 55-6 win over Yellow Medicine East.

In a battle of defeated versus undefeated, the Sting came out as expected with a fumble on their first possession that Morris returned 27 yards for a touchdown. On the Sting’s next possesion, Morris would take an interception back to the house.

The Tigers would score six more times before the Sting got on the board. That lone score would come in the fourth quarter, with Austin Vikander—one of YME’s few offensive producers—hauling in a 16-yard pass from Aaron Lalim.

Thanks to unbeaten regular seasons, BOLD and Morris/Chokio-Alberta will have extra time to prepare for their first prep football playoff games.

Both teams received first-round byes after earning the top seed in their respective sections.

In 6AAA, Morris/Chokio-Alberta (8-0) is expected to play the No. 4 Albany (4-4) and No. 5 Melrose (5-3) winner next Saturday at Big Cat Stadium on the campus of University of Minnesota, Morris.

BOLD (8-0) heads 5AA and will play host in the Oct. 27 semifinals to the winner of Tuesday’s first-round game pitting No. 4 LQPV (4-4) against No. 5 Benson (3-5).
