The trial that has been Yellow Medicine East’s volleyball season came to an end Friday night at the end of a long road—both figuratively and literally—from Espeland Gymnasium to Winthrop and the opening round of the Section 3AA Volleyball Tournament.
The No. 2 seeded Gibbon-Fairfax-Wintrop Thunderbirds quickly extinguished the Sting’s hope for an upset; snuffing out their season with a 18-25, 17-25, 11-25 victory.
GFW’s upset would come one match later as sixth seeded Montevideo bounced them from the tournament Monday.
“The end of a season is always tough, regardless if it’s the first round of Sections, or the fourth round of the State Tournament,” said YME head volleyball coach Tasha Feldman Tuesday.
The Sting end the year with a 3-22 record overall after a meat-grinder of a season where YME tempered their inexperience in the fire of one of the most competitive regions for volleyball in the state.
Feldman gives a laugh when asked about the underclassman ladened lineups she changed more often than the lunch specials at Tillies and the amount of work that needs to be invested into a team that had just two seniors and seven underclassmen. “That’s what you do when you’re rebuilding. A lot of kids got a lot of experience.
“We knew it was going to be a challenge, but the kids accepted that challenge and they kept working. We asked a lot of our seniors (Nena McCalla and Danie Roden), they had to fill a lot of roles and help the younger players get better. All while staying positive. And I think they did that.”
