  • On the cusp of graduation, Minnesota West Community and Technical College student Stan Sebring has been involved with the Business Professionals of America (BPA), a national career and technical student organization, long enough to be considered a BPA veteran.
Like any good veteran, Sebring knows that his experience has endowed him with a responsibility to lead. And like any good veteran he welcomes such opportunities––which is why he vied for, and won,  one of five BPA state officer seats during a recent leadership conference in Duluth in late October.
“I wanted to run because I felt I could start giving back to BPA,” said Sebring. “It is my time to step up.”
As a candidate, Sebring had to go through an arduous round of applications, knowledge tests, and interviews––which all served as but a precursor to the election campaigning.
Sebring, who has spent three years in BPA, said that he believed that his BPA experience, IT background, ideas and the delivery of his speech all worked in tandem to draw votes of fellow BPA members.
“I received a lot compliments on the speech,” said Sebring. “It was unscripted. I just went with the flow and spoke what I was thinking.”
Whatever it was, it worked and Sebring was elected to serve as vice president of public relations.
According to Minnesota West BPA Advisor Leslie Bauman, as a BPA officer Sebring will have a number responsibilities, from planning future conferences to promoting membership.
“Basically they have to represent the state of Minnesota at various events, sometimes for BPA and at other times not,” she said.
With three years of BPA experience under his belt, none of the work will come as a surprise to Sebring who is well prepared to take it on.
