The competitive danceline season began Saturday for the Yellow Medicine East Silhouettes and they kicked it off (pun intended) just fine winning the varsity high kick class at the BOLD Invitational.
"They did a really nice job," said head coach Chris Nerdahl. "It was a good 'first time out'. I liked our kicks and I really like our choreography."
The Silhouettes did not compete at this competition in the varsity jazz classification; deciding it would be better to focus on polishing their 'kick' routine for this first time out.
"We just decided to focus in on getting kick done. I had been sick this past week and we lost a little time in practice and the girls just want to make sure everything's right with the routine before it's debuted."
Both routines will be taken to the Alexandria competition on Jan. 5 when the Silhouettes return from winter break.
As for Saturday's kick performance, what drew the most attention was the team's use of two different costume colors: pink and green and their formations employing them.
"You have to stay symmetrical and it's different than our routines in the past, you really have to pay attention to where those colors line up in the moves and formations," said Nerdahl. "But, it's fun to see where the greens and the pinks line up and it really works with the overall choreography."
Just because it says "winter break" on the YME school calander, doesn't mean there will be much of a break for the Silhouettes. They'll be back to practice 8:00 a.m. the day after Christmas.
"Yeah, we try to keep them busy," says Nerdahl. "We even have a little project for them to do over the break. There's no rest at this point in the season. The race is on."
