James W. Johnson, 82, of Santa Paula, CA ,formerly of Clarkfield, died November 22, 2012.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 12 at Valley Community Four-square Church in Santa Paula, with Internment at the National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
James Weston Johnson was born July 13, 1930 at Montevideo, to Henry and Edna (Olson) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at Clarkfield Lutheran Church. He was raised on a farm near Clarkfield and attended Clarkfield school and graduated from high school in 1948. After graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. Most of his service was spent as an aircraft maintenance instructor. He was discharged in 1952 with the rank of staff sergeant. After his discharge he was head maintenance mechanic for North Central Airlines in Minneapolis.
In 1956 he married Phyllis Hendrickson at Watson Lutheran Church. To this union Ross, Brian and Janet (Najemnik) were born. The family moved to California where James worked for Rockedyne in the space program as a technical writer. He participated in many important programs which included the Apollo space program and received many awards for his services. After his retirement, he started Johnson Aircraft Services at Santa Paula Airport in California. He pursued his passion for aircraft restoration and maintenance which he continued until his passing.
James is survived by his wife Barbara; his three children; grandchildren Derek and Hailey; siblings: Mary Stevens, Henry (Jane), Dona Sather, Lois Knudson, Richard (Sylvia), Elizabeth (Donald) Dack and John. He is also survived by sister-in-law Luella; bothers-in-law Roger Stevens, Kermit Sather, Arthur Knudson; niece Mary Lynn Knudson; and nephews Joshua Burke and Steven Dack.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother David.
