At 120 pounds, Trevor Fagen earned a West Central Conference championship Saturday and led Quad County  to a third place finish at the West Central Conference Tournament in Glenwood.
“I thought that as a team we wrestled extremely well this weekend,” said QC head coach David Wingert. “We wrestled above our seeds at many weights.  We won some matches with last second points, which is very good sign about those wrestlers conditioning and overall will to win.”
Ten of QC’s 13 wrestlers placed sixth or better at the 10-team tournament that was won by Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (Ranked No. 2 in Class A) with 235 points. BOLD placed second with 158 points, while QC earned 124 points to edge fourth place Morris Area and their 117.5 points.
Fagen entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and wrestled his way to the semi finals where he found himself down 4-1 early before coming back to take the victory. In the finals against ACGC’s Derek Dengerud, Fagen continued his cardiac run wrestling from behind until earning his championship with a heart stopping, buzzer beating, takedown for the win as time expired.
“It was incredibly exciting,” said Wingert of Fagen’s championship run. “Trevor had a great day. He came in the three seed and wrestled amazing throughout the day.”
Yet, Fagen wasn’t the only QC wrestler providing drama on the day. “Dylan Johnson had a good day.  He’s been a little rusty since coming back from his injury earlier this month, but he seemed to knock some of the rust off, especially in his third place match,” began Wingert recounting the juniors performance. “In that match he was down by two points with only six seconds left in the match.  On a restart with six seconds left, he did a gator roll from an optional start and got his two-point near fall as time expired.  He then won in overtime to earn himself an All Conference with his third place finish.”
Senior Zach Kluver and junior Colton Specht each wrestled their way into championship matches and both finished in second place.
Said Wingert, “Colton had a huge first period pin in the semi finals over one of the toughest 113 pound wrestlers in the conference and section. He gave up the early takedown, but came back and got the pin.  Zach wrestled a very solid tournament.  He beat a very tough kid from Sauk Centre/Melrose in the semis.  That kid only has five loses all year and two are to Zach.  He lost a close, but well wrestled, finals match to a tough Montevideo kid. Zach is really coming on strong this year and wresting well.”

Other place winners for QC on the day include Evan Suter, Brandon Bratsch and Victor Rivera.
“Overall, I was happy with our third place finish.   Our conference is very tough,” said Wingert whose team now turns their sights on sectionals just two weeks away. “We are trying to continue to work to get better everyday.  At this point in the season there is a lot of work on little things.”
