Section 3AA Semifinals
The first season for Quad County as a team came to an end Friday night with the newly formed co-op bowing out of the Section 3AA Tournament with a 45-28 loss to Adrian Area during the section semifinals in Slayton.
Adrian qualified for a return trip to State after downing QC by beating Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd 36-24 in the finals.
“We knew coming in that Adrain was a very good team,” said QC head coach David Wingert. “Adrain came out very aggressive and intense. Our guys gave it all they had, but we came up short. We were able to rebound after some tough losses in the lower weights to get wins in the upper weights at 152, 170, 195 and heavyweight. Overall, I am proud of our wrestlers. They left everything on the mat.”
The night began with Adrian notching a pin in the first match at 106. Then Coltyn Specht answered for QC with a major decision; winning 10-1 at 113.
From there Adrian went on a roll with three straight pins at 120, 126 and 132. And then a major decision at 138 and a decision at 145.
At 152 Wyatt Hatch stopped the bleeding and let QC hold onto some hope by earning a pin. But back-to-back losses at 160 and 170 spelled the end for QC’s season as a team.
Pins by Aaron Lalim, Trey Cox and Breir Bossman at 182, 195 and heavyweight, respectively, were pins for QC’s pride as the match wound down.
“There are a lot of quality wrestlers,” said Wingert when asked what her thought of his team’s new section and class assignment after spending several years in ultra-competitive 3A. “Some weights should be very competitive and deep this weekend (at Section Individuals).”
The field is wide open for several QC wrestlers to make run at a possible state qualification.
Said Wingert, “Individual sections is always a very intense and unpredictable time. Anything can happen and there can be weights were top seeds go down and lower seeds advance to state. I look foward to two days of great wrestling.”
