  • Dakota fiber artist and poet, Gwen N. Westerman, will be on exhibit at K. K. Berge Gallery in Downtown Granite Falls from now through the end of March.
Art is about documenting culture and spirit of those people who live in a certain place and time. Westerman’s work both visual and literary helps individuals explore the sense of place for the Dakota people of the Minnesota River Valley. The rich colors and hues of her quilts provide a backdrop and context for her poetry.
“The women in my family have made functional quilts from fabric for at least six generations—my childhood was full of them. While many of the quilts I create are utilitarian as well, and I expect them to be used, they also function to tell a story,” said Westerman. “My uncle and my grandma talked about how we need to tell the truth about our people and our history. I like to think that I do that in my art quilts and in my poetry. As Dakota people, we have a long, rich history that explains not only where we came from, but also our responsibilities in this world to each other and to the universe. My art is grounded in Dakota culture and tradition, history, oral tradition, and language recovery—and the continuation of our story.”
Gwen Westerman is a fiscal year 2011 recipient of an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
