Twenty-two-year-old Granite Falls man, Justin Allen, is recovering from injuries sustained after falling from the Oak Street Bridge onto river ice above the Granite Falls Dam Friday.
A bystander who witnessed the fall dialed 9-11 at approximately 9:50 p.m. to report the incident. Granite Falls Police Officer Brian Struffert and fireman, Eric Soine and Wyatt Sand, donned wet suites, tied rope anchors to shore and ventured out onto the ice where they collared and backboarded Allen before pulling him to safety.
On Tuesday, Allen was still recovering from surgery to repair two damaged vertebrae at St. Cloud Hospital.
Struffert said that it was the first time in 18 years that he has ever donned a wet suit. Just a few weeks prior, the fire department had taken to the river near the footbridge and practiced river ice rescue scenarios.
Allen is expected to be able to return home and continue his recovery as early as Wednesday.
