  •    More than a hundred years ago, leaders in Granite Falls led the way to provide electricity for the town with the construction of its generation dam on the Minnesota River.  Now, a century later, the Granite Falls City Council must decide if a major investment to refurbish dam generation is the best way forward.
There has never been a greater opportunity for city leaders to consider the vast array of options available to replace dam generation with other strategies, including: power contracts from other generators and new investments in wind and solar. A greater emphasis on local energy provided directly by local residents combined with increased efforts toward energy efficiency could also fit the bill.
In the end, Granite Falls would not only lead in its investment for this century’s mix of electricity generation, but it would also lead by investing in the larger momentum to create a restored Minnesota River.
