  • When youthful energy is supported by elder wisdom, good things happen. Which is why Yellow Medicine East High School FFA and Ag Instructor Darrel Refsland is leading the charge to form an FFA Alumni Association.
"The purpose of a Alumni Association would be to bridge the gap between our local High School FFA Chapter and the adults in our communities that were past FFA members," said Refsland. "I believe this is a great opportunity for everyone in the community to get involved with some very awesome young people that would be a benefit for everyone involved."
On Sunday, April 21, a kick-off meeting for FFA Alumni is set to be held in the YME High School Cafeteria at 5:00 p.m.
At this point, Refsland said an exact count of potential alumni members is unknown. However, he is certain that the number of past FFA members who have continued to live and work in the area community, or who have moved back, is considerable.
Refsland said he hopes to use the kick-off to showcase what the local FFA chapter is doing as well as its importance to the area community and school district. From there, he believes that present and past FFA members can brainstorm opportunities for mutually rewarding collaboration.
"The FFA Alumni could get involved in coaching and judging teams as well as other FFA activities that we do as a Chapter. In return, the members of the Alumni would get to know the students and see what fine young people are coming through the YME FFA Chapter," Refsland said. "It's all about making connections. You just never know how a connection can lead to a career in Agriculture."
