Paul Gerhard Schmidt III, successful explorer and geologist, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2013 in Lakewood, CO.
Paul began his career with expeditions to Antarctica, where he has a glacier named after him. He is credited with discovering major ore deposits across the United States. He was an outdoors man and hunter, and enjoyed the beauty of nature. Paul was also very active with Habitat for Humanity and the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Evergreen, CO.
Paul was born on August 6, 1934, in Granite Falls. He was the son of Dr. Paul G. and Chic Schmidt, longtime physician in Granite Falls. Paul graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1952. He will be buried next to his parents in Granite Falls.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann, in Evergreen, CO; brother, John (Molly) Schmidt in Litchfield, and sister, Susan (Jon) Nymo in Cable, WI; daughters: Maja Haloway and Melaura (Dan) Schmidt Duncan; son Paul (Julaine) G. Schmidt IV; six grandchildren: Daniel Albers, Benjamin Albers, Walter (Kelli) Duncan, Astri Duncan, Paul G. Schmidt V, Ryan Schmidt; and great granddaughter, Sofi Jean Duncan.
The interment service and burial will be graveside on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Granite Falls.
The family will hold a memorial reception immediately following the service at Granite Falls Lutheran Church, 350 9th Avenue, Granite Falls.
