This Friday and Saturday the Granite Falls Area Community Theater and YME Drama Club will present  "Steel Magnolias" at the YME High School Little Theater this Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at  2:00 p.m.
Steel Magnolias is a comedy–drama about the bond among a  close-knit circle of Southern women whose lives converge in northwest Louisiana.
As the title suggests, the women are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.  Filled with humor and heartbreak, the audience is bound to both laugh and cry as the realities of their lives in tiny Chiquapin Parish unfold.
“It is a funny show with a few serious moments. It has a great overall theme,” said Director Jeff Iverson.
Iverson, who is also the YME Choir Instructor, has teamed with student director Grant Elliot to head the production. The play involves six female lead characters of varying ages, which was a large reason that the show was chosen in the first place.
With the ages of character ranging from 19 to 60,  “It looked like a great opportunity for our kids and adults in the community,” said Iverson.
The six female leads include Robyn Speh as beauty shop owner, Truvy Jones;  Haley Spielman as beauty shop assistant, Annelle Dupuy; Carrie Speh as widow of the former mayor, Clairee Belcher; Sophie Timm as the prettiest girl in town, Shelby Eatenton; Keaunna Hammer as Shelby’s mother, M'ylnn Eatenton; and Mary Virnig as the wealthy and witty old lady, Ouiser Boudreaux.
Backstage hands include YME students Shane Nokleby and Cody Speh.
Advance tickets for the production are available at Granite Falls Bank, Books by Kelly or at the High School Choir office from Iverson.  Tickets run $7 for adults and $5 for students in advance, while tickets at the door  will be $8 for adults and $6 for students.
