  • Heart of the Prairie Days, Clarkfield’s annual community celebration, is returning this year on May 31—June 1, to kick off the small-town summer festival scene in southwest Minnesota.
After a meeting last week, the Clarkfield Civic and Commerce organization, who annually organizes the civic celebration, put out a call for volunteers.
“We need people to help out to make Heart of the Prairie Days successful,” said Jennifer Gilyard, the new manager at The Ink Spot who has stepped up to join the Clarkfield C&C and help organize Heart of the Prairie Days just a month after taking over management of the long-time Clarkfield business. “[Volunteers] need to sign up by May 1, 2013, [because] depending on volunteers, it will depend on what we will be able to offer as far as events.”
The Clarkfield C&C has made it easy for volunteers to sign up this year by posting their volunteer sign-up online. To sign up to volunteer for Heart of the Prairie Days, those interested can go to http://vols.pt.JkehoC and choose the date, time and the event they want to volunteer for.
Volunteers can also sign-up by contacting committee leaders. Committee leaders are Jana Suckow (janaflattum@ecumen.org) who will be leading the food stand volunteers, Tracie Fonkert (traciefonkert@gmail.com) who will be leading the parade volunteers and Sue Fritz (gsfritz@frontiernet.net) who will be heading organization of the Clarkfield city-wide garage sale. Meanwhile, Gilyard (j_gilyard@hotmail.com) will be leading the volunteers in charge of the inflatable fun park that is expected to entertain area kids all weekend.
“We would like to do an activity on Friday night, but we understand there is [Yellow Medicine East’s] graduation that night,” said Gilyard. “If there is an interest for an activity, such as “Clarkfield’s Got Talent” please contact David Werner at (320) 226-3038. We would need to find donations for a stage, a Master of Ceremonies, equipment and lighting.”
Tentatively, the rough schedule for Heart of the Prairie Days begins Thursday, May 31 with city-wide garage sales, a food stand, bingo and one of the finest parades in the area. On Friday the garage sales, food stand and bingo all continue. Then on Saturday it’s the big blow-out with a kiddie parade scheduled for 3 p.m., bouncy houses, a hog roast, beer gardens and—of course—the Saturday night street dance featuring Hicktown Mafia.
