    The University of Minnesota Southwest Research and Outreach Center's annual Organic Field Day will be held on Tuesday, July 9 near Lamberton, Minnesota with registration beginning at 8:30.

  • 2013 University of Minnesota Organic Field Day: The Basics – Soil, Fertility, Weeds, and Crop Rotations.
    The University of Minnesota Southwest Research and Outreach Center's annual Organic Field Day will be held on Tuesday, July 9 near Lamberton, Minnesota with registration beginning at 8:30.
    A field and plot tour will begin at 9:15. The tour will highlight the SWROC's three high tunnel season extension facilities. This tour will also make stops at the dry edible bean plots and the soil microbes studies.
    Following lunch Dr. Jeff Strock, Soil Scientist, U of M SWROC, will head the afternoon sessions in the auditorium with his talk on "Soil Properties, What Are They?" He will be followed by Dr. Paulo Pagliari, Soil Scientist, U of M SWROC's, discussion on "P Availability in Animal Manures." Reduced Tillage Crop Production in an Organic Dairy System with George Nelson, scientist and farm manager at West Central Research and Outreach Center's (WCROC) will explain the crop rotation used with the organic dairy at the WCROC at Morris. Laura Fernandez, University of Minnesota graduate student will conclude the sessions with a talk about a unique closed system fertility research project "Evaluating the Use of Alfalfa as Surface Mulch in Corn Cropping Systems."
    There will be time for a brief wrap up session to end the day.
    The Organic Field Day is open to the public and will include time to network and visit exhibits. No pre-registration is required. An $8.00 fee will be charged for lunch.
