Looking for another way to enjoy the river and be outdoors? With the recent addition of two disc golf courses – the two communities of Granite Falls and Montevideo are joining together to provide a unique riverfront disc golf experience. Saturday, July 13 and Sunday July 14 have been slated for The Monte-Granite Riverfront Disc Golf Classic. This family friendly event has something for everyone. On Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m., the public is invited to come to the Sunset Lodge #109 Disc Golf Course in Lagoon Park, Montevideo and learn the basics of disc golf. The first 100 participants will receive a free disc. There will be four stations that will teach basic disc skills and beginning at 10:00 a.m. there will be open recreational play to practice those skills. Beginning at 1:30 p.m. for those folks with a few skills under their belt, registration begins for the first ever Monte-Granite Riverfront Disc Golf Classic. This non-sanctioned open will have three categories for competition: Men's, Women's and Youth. The entry fee is $10 per person. There will be prizes awarded on Sunday after the two-day, 36-hole event. Here is where the “something for everyone” comes in – Saturday evening at Wegdahl County Park along the Minnesota River halfway between Granite Falls and Montevideo on Highway 212 there will be a light supper and beginning at 7:00 p.m., there will be a Disc Golf Exhibition throwing contest. This is a great way to learn more about the sport and see why people are so interested in this fun outdoor sport. This event is free and open to the public – SO bring your lawn chairs, bug spray and interest. There will be smores and a campfire beginning at 8:30 p.m. Come join in the fun. Sunday morning beginning at 10:00 a.m. people will finish the last 18 holes at the River's Edge Disc Golf Course in downtown Granite Falls. The winners and awards will be announced at approximately 1:00 p.m. or when the play finishes. Both courses were part of a BlueCross and BlueShield of Minnesota Foundation “Connect for Health” challenge grant that was proposed by Clean Up the River Environment (CURE) to provide alternative activities that engage people around the river and the outdoors in addition to connecting the two communities. The Montevideo Sunset Lodge #109 Disc Golf Course was completed in the fall of 2012 with disc golf enthusiast Jason Buckingham spearheading the project. The River's Edge Disc Golf Course was the vision of local disc golf enthusiast Steve Virnig and became a community project with the help of a core of committed volunteers. This joint project was made possible by support in both communities as well as the region. The Granite Falls course received support from the Granite Falls Bank, F & M Insurance Agency, YME Community Education, the City of Granite Falls Park Board, the City of Granite Falls, Jimmy's Pizza, Granite Run Golf Course, the Upper Sioux Community, Granite Falls EDA, Zempel Decorating, Dave's Trailer Sales, Dave's Bottled Water, Dakota Wicohan, Granite Falls Kiwanis and Mapformation, LLC. Both projects received administrative and programming support from Clean Up the River Environment (CURE).
