Some beers are sneaky. When you drink an 8.5 percent alcohol by volume beer, you expect to be able to taste a little booziness. It gets a little dangerous (or fun) when you can’t taste the booze because you can drink it a little too fast.

backlash_beer_logoThat’s the case with Backlash Beer Company with Catalyst. This double IPA is at 8.5 percent ABV, but you can’t tell. It has a big hop presence, but like any good double IPA, they do a good job of balancing it with a sweet malt backbone.

I’ve only had a small sample of it, but this is my favorite Backlash beer so far. It’s a hop punch in the mouth, and sometimes you just need that.

A little bonus for dog lovers, the label features Stout the bulldog.
