  • In tandem with the first day of school at the Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Granite Falls, Campus Dean Linda DeGriselles led a tearful tree dedication ceremony honoring a pair of recently deceased community pillars in former state Senator Gary Kubly and former Minnesota West campus administrator Elroy Burgeson. Joined by family and friends of the two community icons as well as  Minnesota West President Ric Shrubb, Granite Falls Mayor Dave Smiglewski and others, DeGriselles noted that the oak tree stands for “strength and courage, “and that she could think of no more appropriate symbol to embody the role models. “Our campus tree committee felt that it was right and proper to dedicate an oak tree to each of these caring, compassionate and courageous men,” she told the few dozen present. “We also felt that the right place for planting these trees was near the building and where the children of Prairie Land Day Care play. Just as Senator Kubly and President Burgeson watched out for the best interests of others, these oak trees will grow strong like the men they represent––protecting the college and providing shade and comfort to the children that play here.”
