  • On August 10, a relative handful of the most vocally talented students in Minnesota took part in the 2013 All-State Choir performances held at St. John's University. Representing Yellow Medicine East, was Granite Falls resident Emma Woods.
"I feel honored to have had Emma represent YME at All-State," said YME Choir Director Jeff Iverson. "It takes a lot of hard work to be selected for these groups in Minnesota. There are several thousand vocally talented students in our state making the audition process a real challenge. I was thrilled when I found out she was selected as a participant."
This past March, Woods was one of some 2,000 students from across the state who auditioned to be a part of All-State mixed, men's and women's choirs. In May the talented junior was informed that she was one of 12 who had been accepted to sing Soprano in the Jo-Michael Scheibe directed Mixed Choir.
Chair of the Thorton School of Music at the University of Southern California, Scheibe presided over week long rehearsals and activities that were held at Saint John's University from August 5-10 in preparation for the All-State Choir Concert held the following weekend.
All of the All-State musicians will meet again to perform at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis in February 2014.
    Said Woods
    of the experience:
"Singing in the All-State Mixed Choir was an incredible experience! I especially loved how all the kids there really appreciated and cared about the music. It was awesome to hear how amazing a group of high school students can sound. Working with Dr. Scheibe was an honor and I feel so privileged to have been able to sing under his direction. One of the pieces we sang was commissioned for the 2013-2014 All-State Mixed Choir, and the composer came and worked with us one of the days, which was an experience I will never forget! I made so many great friends during the week, and I continue to stay in touch with them. I can't wait for February when we all get to sing together again!"
