Yellow Medicine East Superintendent Al Stoeckman has announced his intentions to leave the school district at the end of the year, but the YME School Board is hoping that it can sway Stoeckman into staying.
Stoeckman, who is in the final year of his second three-year contract with the school district, reportedly sent an email to board members informing them that he would not renew his contract going forward.
Reached for comment, Stoeckman had little to say about his reasons for the decision, stating only that "I felt it was time for a change in leadership."
School Board Chair Grant Velde said that the board is pleased with Stoeckman's performance and that a negotiating committee made up of himself, Tim Opdahl and Jane Hagert will meet with the superintendent Thursday morning in an effort convince him that his place is still with the YME community.
"He's got a great work ethic," said Velde. "He transitioned the school through a lot of stressful phases and always kept things positive going through them while promoting a sense of calm and not panic."
