Friday’s match up: YME (0-6) vs. ACGC (4-2) at ACGC 7:00
Last match up: 2012, 45-6, ACGC victory.
Falcons overview: The Falcons are coming off of a 9-3 season, including a loss to Mahnomen at State. ACGC was 6-2 in the regular season, and depending on the outcome of the next two games, they could be back in the running for a successful sections bout again. Their two losses were against the heavy-hitting Paynesville Bulldogs and Minnewaska Lakers. But two straight losses only empowered the Falcons, who went on to win two shutouts in a row. The team is fairly balanced, with no one player taking all the glory. If the Falcons are to continue on their well-played streak, touchdowns could come from running backs Maverick Whitcomb, Jordan Nelson and quarterback Taylor Larson. The race for placing is starting to heat up, as ACGC, BOLD, Minnewaska Area and Sauk Centre are all tied for second in the conference and hoping for a coveted bye in the Sections tournament.
Sting overview: You can only go up during a winless season. The first half of the game against BOLD was certainly the worst half of Sting football all year, even against the undefeated Paynesville Bulldogs. Yet the second half was rather good, and YME was only outscored by one point. Maybe it was a rousing speech from the coaches during halftime, or maybe the Sting players are living out a football version of Schrödinger's cat experiment, simultaneously capable of being a winning or losing team that you can only see if you open the box and look. YME certainly has the ability and talent to win a game and have been closer this season than the two preceding it. They just need the right plays and players to connect before the opponents get into their own groove.
