  • YME 14, Morris/CA 7 A sigh of relief was followed by arguably the loudest cheers in Granite Falls in years, with window-shaking decibels and enough exhaled breath to warm the stadium on the chilly, late autumn night on Wednesday. The Sting football snapped their 26-game losing streak by defeating the Morris Tigers 14-7, their first win since 2010. The signs of a victory were evident almost immediately into the start of the game. The Sting held off the first drive by Morris, and mere minutes later, Austin Vikander had already scored with a 16-yard rushed touchdown. But the thrills and stress did not stop there. The next YME drive was cut short by an interception, but despite being within 20 yards of a touchdown, the Tigers got so many holdings penalties that it negated their many touchdown attempts. Later in the first half, Morris tried to hold off the Sting from producing another touchdown, but a passing interference on a 4th down throw kept YME in the game long enough to attempt a field goal, although the attempt was short by just a few feet. YME was unable to answer the 3rd quarter touchdown by Morris until late into the fourth quarter, when quarterback Blake Lindstrom connected with Chase Richter for an 83-yard touchdown reception that not only broke the tie, but gave the Sting the win they needed to snap their losing streak. Although Morris had possession longer, with more than double the first downs and rushing yards as YME, they were unable to deliver, especially because of their penalties that came at key points throughout the game. The Tiger's Isaac Wente led rushing yards with 126 on 26 attempts, followed by Austin Vikander with 105 yards. Although it was followed by another bout with the undefeated Bulldogs in the playoffs, the mostly young team showed that next year holds many more surprises and thrills up their sleeves.
