Come experience a weekend of your favorite showstoppers as the Song of the Prairie A Cappella Show Chorus presents “Barbershop on Broadway.” Two performances will be given. An evening show is scheduled for Saturday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Granite Falls, and a matinee is scheduled the following day, Sunday, October 27, at 2:00 p.m. at Tracy Lutheran Church in Tracy. Chorus director Donovan Hanson is preparing the chorus for its first big show since he joined the group a year ago. Shortly after moving to Tracy to take a position teaching elementary music, he received a phone call inquiring about his interest in directing the chorus. After an initial meeting with a handful of chorus members and a rehearsal or two, he realized it was an opportunity he just couldn’t pass up. “The chorus members like to joke that they’re not much different from kindergarteners when it comes to attention span,” said Hanson. “But they definitely have a different sound! Each of these ladies brings everything they have to the group every single week when we rehearse. They work hard, they know their craft, and they have endless fun doing it. What more could I possibly want?” In case one is not familiar with Song of the Prairie, the group has been an officially chartered chapter of Sweet Adelines International since 2006, though it has roots that go back much further. However, with this particular pair of concerts, the typical barbershop melodies have been left behind in favor of a set completely comprised of show tunes. A wide array of musical theatre is represented, from 42nd Street to Guys and Dolls, from The Music Man to Cats, and even from The Wizard of Oz to Mary Poppins. The entire show is tied together with jokes and brief bits of narration that take audience members on a journey down Broadway through the years. In addition to the rollicking show tunes and dreamy ballads presented by the full chorus, each show will also feature a performance by local quartet Popular Demand. These talented women are all former members of Song of the Prairie, and they bring their enthusiasm and ability to a wide and always appreciative audience. Tickets for each performance are available at the door for $10 each. Tickets may also be purchased in advance at a reduced rate of $8. Advance tickets are available at the K.K. Berge Building in Granite Falls, at the MAFAC Art Gallery in Marshall, at Food Pride in Tracy, or from any chorus member.
