  • Four students receive student ExCEL award

  • Sleepy Eye Public and St. Mary’s schools announced that Nick DeMaris, Sabrina Portner, Matt Miller and Bethany Seifert are the recipients of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL)ExCEL award.

  • Sleepy Eye Public and St. Mary’s schools announced that Nick DeMaris, Sabrina Portner, Matt Miller and Bethany Seifert are the recipients of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL)ExCEL award.
     
    The award, which stands for Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership, is a recognition program for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities and who are model citizens.
     
    Nick DeMaris, son of Scott Demaris, is a triple-sport athlete at St. Mary’s, as well as involved in musical arts. Nick is a member of the National Honor Society and has held the titles of class treasurer and secretary. Nick is active at his church serving as a mass server and also volunteers his time in school as a media center aide and coordinates the school’s athletic Twitter page.
     
    Sabrina Portner, daughter of Tom and Mary Portner, is active in her local 4-H club serving as club vice president and previously holding offices of president and secretary. She has also held various leadership roles as County Federation President, Vice President, serves as a Brown County Ambassador and has participated in various FFA team competitions.
     
    In addition to her volunteer service to the community, Sabrina has been on the ‘A’ honor roll at her school beginning as a freshman and is a member of the KnowledgeBowl team and National Honor Society.
     
    Matt Miller, son of Doug and Holly Miller, is a multi-sport athlete at Sleepy Eye Public High School as well as being involved in musical arts. Matt has been on the ‘A’ honor roll at his school, is a member of the National Honor Society and takes part in FFA. He also volunteers his time on various committees in school.
    In the community Matt volunteers his time for Adopt a Highway and takes an active part in his church.
     
    Bethany Seifert, daughter of Steven and Barbara Seifert, plays varsity in two sports and is involved in the musical arts. She has been named on the ‘A’ honor roll at her school and is a member of National Honor Society and FFA where she holds the leadership position of Chapter Reporter. She is also a member of the Knowledge Bowl team, a Brown County Dairy Ambassador and volunteers her time in community theater and at her church.
     
    An independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota will select ExCEL award recipients in January. Those winners will be recognized on KSTC-TV (Channel 45) during the broadcast of the 2014 winter tournaments.
