  • Christmas Night in the Condo

    • email print
  •  Twas the night of Christmas, when all through the condo
Not a creature was stirring, not even frisky Fido.
The gifts were piled under and around the tree,
Looking like castles under the sea.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While their stomachs were filled; dreams danced in their heads.
Dad was snoring in bed beside me,
I dreamed of a robot to rent at a reasonable fee.
When down in the living room there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
And to the stairs I flew like a flash,
Switched on the light before I made a mad dash.
The moon shown on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my searching eyes should appear,
But the Christmas tree laying on the floor with Fido near.
Fido lay on his back with wrapping on his head,
His tale was wagging like he was going to be fed.
He twisted and turned, started to run round the tree.
His eyes were still blinded by the wrapping; not free
Oh David! Now Richard! Now Kathy and Mary!
Greg, Doug, Daniel, Sara and Barry!
To the top of the stair, they ran into the wall.
“What?” “Where?” “The noise?” “Careful don’t fall!”
All tumbled and bumped and grabbed for the rail.
PJs  became life saving strands, hands grabbing, faces pale.
First one, then another ‘til each found a place
Feet untangling, hands free and safe.
Down the stairs they went like a hoard of honey bees.
Looking for the gifts that had been left under the tree.
David yelled at Fido, Richard grabbed for the wrap.
Kathy and Mary ran to the tree; Greg pulled free his new cap.
By now Dad had awakened and entered the room,
“Come on boys get hold of the tree; girls get the broom.”
As the little ones crawled round the floor amid the mess,
The tree was placed upright; ornaments in place relieved stress.
I went to the kitchen, dad followed me there.
I looked at him and slumped into a chair.
He came up beside me, gave me a kiss,
“Don’t worry dear, it’s all Christmas bliss.”
As I made coffee I heard from the next room,
Page 2 of 2 - “Did anyone find a new car that goes zoom?”
“I’ve got a new iPod I’ll trade for an air gun.”
“Don’t cry Sara, play with your new baby, have some fun.”
Dad and I relaxed as the coffee did brew,
A familiar sound I heard and suddenly knew
It was St. Nick and his fabulous crew.
I looked through the skylight and there they flew.
He laughed in his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, everything will be all right.”
