The YME Speech Team’s season is winding down with Sub-section competition fast approaching. The team, comprised of one senior, two juniors, and a freshman, have competed in area invitationals since February.
All of these contests have been preparation for a chance to go to the State tournament in April. In order to advance, speakers must place 1st - 4th in their category at Sub-sections. Those top 4 advance to the Section 3A competition at SMSU on Saturday, April 5. In order to go on to the State contest, speakers must place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
This year the team has had students competing in three different categories: Creative Expression, Dramatic Interpretation, and Humorous. In Creative, the students write their own speech and “perform” it. This year Allison Carmany and Taylor Keener are competing in this category. In Drama, any piece that has been performed on stage is eligible as a selection. Mariah Norell competes in this category. Sophie Timm has chosen a funny piece called, “Queen of the World” that she has memorized in the Humorous category.
The team's best showing this year was at the Morris Candyland Speech Invitational, where they placed 5th in total team points. In the preliminary rounds, Taylor and Allison scored points in Creative, Sophie in Humorous, and Mariah in Dramatic Interpretation. Allison and Mariah advanced to the final round in their categories - Allison earned 2nd place honors and Mariah medaled at 6th place.
The next team competition will be Sub-sections on Friday, March 28 at Montevideo High School. The first round of speeches begins at 4:15 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
