  • Softball: Blackjacks end Sting Sections run

    The No. 2 seeded Dawson-Boyd softball team continued on in the Sections 3A-North tournament after defeating the Sting at home.
    The Blackjacks had four runs in the first two innings, taking an early strong lead in the first round of the Sections tournament.
    YME’s sole runs came in the fifth inning, when Megan Odegard and Marissa Sneller each snagged triples, with RBIs for both Hailey Enstad and Marissa Sneller.
    The Blackjacks had 10 runs on 12 hits, including two doubles and three runs from Andrea Lee and an RBI for both of Sadie Zaiser’s successful at bats.
    Zaiser was on the mound for Dawson-Boyd, pitching seven innings and only giving up four hits.
    Mariah Norell was credited with the loss, pitching six innings including three strikeouts and one walk.

    The Sting softball team pulled off the upset against Ortonville in the Section play-in game on Friday night.
    YME, No. 10-seed in the Section, beat the No. 7 ranked Ortonville Trojans 10-7 for their second win of the season.
    Starting in the third inning with three runs, the Sting amassed runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, overtaking the early 7-3 lead held by the Trojans.
    Marissa Sneller was 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three runs, and Hailey Enstad was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Becca Rigge, Sam Rigge, Allison Carmany, Allie Zieske and pitcher Mariah Norell each had an RBI.
    Norell pitched the complete game, holding off the Trojan batters after the third inning.

    The Dutchmen solidified their early lead with a six-run third inning against the Sting in the Thursday afternoon softball game.
    YME had four hits, including two from Sam Rigge, but were unable to score a run.
    Nikki Zierden and Morgan Notch each had a home run for Melrose, as well as five combined RBIs.
    Mariah Norell pitched four innings before giving up the final two runs to solicit the ten-run rule. Madison Rausch pitched five innings, including three strikeouts for Melrose.
