Two brothers from Balaton were arrested and charged in connection to the July 18 shooting of Dan Scheff after attempting to outrun the police through Lyon and Lincoln counties early last week.
Devin Hexum, 21, was charged with two felony charges – second degree attempted murder with intent and first degree assault that caused great bodily harm after he allegedly shot Dan Scheff multiple times in the early morning hours of July 18.
Derek Hexum, the 19-year-old younger brother, was charged with a felony count of aiding an offender to avoid arrest. Both are being held on $100,000 bail in the Yellow Medicine County jail.
According to the criminal complaint, it was originally believed that Scheff had been hit by a car, as he was unresponsive when the five males that discovered him in the middle of Hwy 23 called 911.
Once Yellow Medicine County Sheriff Deputies Marshall Doyle and Erik Knutson arrived, Scheff said that he was shot, adding that the male who “gave [him] a ride” was the one who shot him and also stole his wallet. Scheff did not know the males personally who had picked him up in Granite Falls earlier that night.
Three days later, Yellow Medicine County Sheriff Deputies Erik Knutson and Kevin Schwerin went to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis to interview Scheff when he was in better condition to talk.
Scheff stated that he had never seen the two males that drove up to him in a pickup and struck up a conversation. He later decided to get in the vehicle after talking to them for a while.
They drove south on Hwy. 23 when the pickup apparently experienced mechanical problems just a few hundred yards from Scheff’s relative’s house.
Scheff told the deputies that after he got out and started walking for help, the passenger with “longer blond [hair] and a pointy nose” came along, pulled out a handgun after asking where Scheff’s money was and shot him multiple times.
Scheff was then able to identify his shooter as Devin Hexum, stating that he “would never forget the face of the man who shot him.”
Deputy Knutson also spoke with Michael Schroer, a friend/acquaintance of Hexum, who said that Devin told him that he had shot a man he had picked up in Granite Falls. Hexum also allegedly asked Schroer for money for the brothers to get out of Minnesota.
After the pickup was located in Lyon county, the brothers initiated a nearly 45-minute police chase, which ended after an officer flipped the pickup near the South Dakota border.
The first court appearance of Devin Hexum has been scheduled for August 4 at 8:30 a.m.
