Cottonwood photographer Bill Van der Hagen has just three years as a professional photographer under his belt, but has built a portfolio of work on his website of nature, portrait and architectural work.
He became interested in photography when, while spending time at a downtown Marshall coffee house, he saw and appreciated a nature photography display. He contacted the photographer and began learning about photography techniques.
Having always been artistically involved in something, playing classical guitar and being involved in bands as well as attending college at the Art Institute as well as the International Academy of Design in Cottonwood, photography has come naturally.
Van der Hagen’s work has been displayed throughout the area at different shows, and he has been a featured artist in a Midwest showcase of photographers in Artistik magazine.  Van der Hagen also assists Cottonwood photographer Crystal Smith with events.
Van der Hagen continues his own photography education on a regular basis, reading books involved with photography and the use of Photoshop, something he says he is addicted to.
He enjoys nature photography as he grew up spending a lot of time outdoors, and architecture photography because of the lines of the structures and colors.
He uses a lot of High Dynamic Range editing in his photographs to give them a larger-than-life effect, merging multiple exposures together.
His work has him looking at everything in a different light.
“I look now more than I used to. I look at shadows a lot. It’s hard not to,” he says.
Van der Hagen also does portrait work, and says he likes to approach such opportunities in a more natural, less posed atmosphere.
Van der Hagen’s work will be on display April 3 at the Prairie’s Edge photo exhibit from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the annual Granite Arts Council Art Show and Celebration. His prints will also be available for sale at that event.
His full portfolio can be seen online at prints.billvanderhagen.com or on his Facebook Fan page.
