Each year the Minnesota State Patrol honors citizens, troopers and State Patrol employees who performed life-savings acts, excelled in a crisis or ensured safer Minnesota Roads.
During an award ceremony held Tuesday April 20, Clarkfield resident and State Trooper Ryan Marthaler was recognized for his actions during the rescue of a Yellow Medicine County man attempting suicide.
Marthaler was one of only six State Troopers to be awarded at the event, having been nominated by his superior, Lieutenant John Edner. For his actions,  he received a certificate and pin to include on his uniform.
Said Marthaler, “It was nice to receive something I never really expected to get.”
A press release acknowledging Marthaler’s efforts and recounting the incident reads below:
At approximately 5:30 p.m. on January 30, Trp. Ryan Marthaler responded to a report of an attempted suicide in Yellow Medicine County. When he arrived at the scene, he was directed to a truck parked in a garage. He observed an unresponsive man lying on the seat of the pick-up and smelled the strong odor of exhaust. Ryan gave the man a sternum rub in an attempt to awaken him; he became somewhat responsive by opening his eyes. Because the odor of exhaust was very strong, Ryan grabbed the man under the arms, removed him from the truck, and dragged him into the house, which also had a strong smell of exhaust and the smoke detector going off.
The man continued to go in and out of consciousness so Ryan would give him a sternum rub to wake him up. A short time later a deputy arrived with oxygen, which they administered until the ambulance arrived and transported the man to the hospital.
For his actions, Trp. Ryan Marthaler is presented with the Life Saving Award.
