It’s not often that the Granite Falls area gets to star in its own television production, but an offer from Pioneer Public Television (PPTV) has some community members already preparing for the closeup.
The unique opportunity to showcase the area comes in the wake of the production, Great Minnesota Parks. In the 2009 PPTV broadcast, a light was shed on Minnesota state parks located in Alexandria, New London, Redwood Falls and Luverne. Program accolades justified a followup presentation, and this production currently in its infancy stages has been dubbed Great Minnesota Parks: Minnesota River Sensations.
Once again, four parks will be the focus of four programs that peer into the beauty, history and offerings of each park as well aspects of the surrounding area. Along with Fort Ridgely, Big Stone Lake and Lac qui Parle, the Upper Sioux State Agency Park is one of the chosen few.
The Granite Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors’ Bureau are collaborating with PPTV to see to it that the production is able to take place. The Upper Sioux State Agency Park’s inclusion into Minnesota River Sensations is dependent upon a local $5,000 match that is required March 31.
On the need to share in the costs of the program, PPTV Corporate Support Representative Donna Wierenga said, “As a non-profit community based location with limited resources, PPTV seeks contributions to support production of local programs.  Four communities took advantage of this opportunity last year and were extremely pleased with the results.”
Chamber of Commerce Director Nicole Zempel has been one of the most outspoken advocates for the local areas commitment to the series.
“This is one way to capitalize on our natural assets through a medium that reaches a broad and far reaching audience from a reputable source that people trust,” she said.
“Communities that offer recreational opportunity are places that people want to live and want to do business.”
To date,  $1,375 have been raised for the project leaving just under two weeks to pool the $3,625 needed to make the show go.
Zempel says that donations are welcome from any civic, business or individual entity, and that each little bit will help.
Those interested in getting involved should contact the Chamber at 564-4039.
“It's a unique opportunity to showcase our area,” Zempel said. “When something like this knocks at our door, it'd be a shame to let the opportunity pass us by.”
