“She gives unstintingly of her time and talents”...”Show(s) her love of volunteering”... and “is tireless in her efforts to make the community a better place” were just a few of the phrases used to describe Ruby Hieb in her selection as 2010 Outstanding Senior Volunteer for Yellow Medicine County.
Hieb, from Granite Falls, earned the honor with her active involvement in upwards of nine different community organizations. She’s a chairperson of the annual American Cancer Society Daffodil Days, volunteers in the Circle Sentencing for Youth in Yellow Medicine County, she is a member of the Lady Slipper Garden Club, a member of the Senior Citizen Advisory Board, active in fundraising efforts for the preservation of the K.K. Berge building in downtown Granite Falls, organizes the distribution of food locally from Second Harvest Heartland, volunteers for the Living at Home Block Nurse Program and is also a faithful member and volunteer at the United Church of Christ in Granite Falls.
The ‘Outstanding Senior Volunteer’ award given to Hieb is an award that recognizes outstanding seniors who display leadership, a diversity of accomplishments, a variety of volunteer services performed and a quantity and quality of activities.
The Minnesota Board on Aging along with the Minnesota State Fair Board and the Minnesota Federation of County Fairs began honoring outstanding senior citizen volunteers in 1965. Each county selects two individuals from scores of nominations to recognize at the county level. Those two volunteers then go on to the State Fair to represent their county and have a chance to be recognized as the Outstanding Senior Volunteer of Minnesota on Senior Day at the Minnesota State Fair.
In her nomination of Hieb, Senior Advocate Heather Velde said, “Ruby is very humble about receiving thanks for all the work she does. When told she was nominated for this award she wasn’t sure she wanted to be recognized and asked immediately if there wasn’t someone else we should be honoring. Ruby is an amazing person that goes out of her way to make this world a better place and is well deserving of this award.”
The Minnesota Outstanding Senior Citizens Award will be given out on Seniors Day on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the Leinie Lodge Bandshell.
