With the development of the city’s newest business, Clarkfield’s iconic cardinal may need to be refreshed. Added biceps maybe? Some pectoral muscles? The bird legs will definitely have to go... some robust calves and mighty thighs are probably a must.
O.k., that’s probably getting carried away, but it illustrates the point: Clarkfield is extremely excited about the August 20 and 21 grand opening of its own fitness facility, “I-Fit.”
It was two years ago that Adam Isaacs returned to his hometown Clarkfield and immediately started making a positive impact with his wife Krista. Krista has made her presence felt by serving as a member of the Clarkfield Foundation grant committee  while Adam joined the local Civic and Commerce, the EDA, took on an active role organizing the Heart of the Prairie Days and initiated what has become a popular annual chili cook-off. The couple’s joint effort to establish I-Fit is but another example of their commitment to the community and their purposeful intent to improve the town’s overall health.
“We’re going to try and make it so that it’s more than just a place to go work out,” said Adam. “We want it to be about total health where if somebody needs guidance or nutrition planning we can offer that. But if they just want to go work out and build muscle, they can do that too.”
Adam said that he and Krista had toyed with the idea of opening a fitness center in Clarkfield ever since their arrival but that it wasn’t until this March that the two decided to take the leap. The Isaacs spent a few months considering different spaces to house the venture before eventually deciding on a location in the former Ice Rink, purchased from the city by resident, Steve Gniffke, last fall.
Gniffke renovated the lobby area following his acquisition with the original intent of renting out the space for offices. The layout turned out to be ideal for a fitness center, however, and the Isaacs were particularly pleased by its placement along Main Street.
The pair has a 15 month old daughter, Allison, and each has a job – Adam as a Recruiting Manager for Land O’ Lakes and Krista as fourth grade teacher in Montevideo – so it was essential that their business plan did not require them to be on-site at all times. I-Fit will be a 24-hour unstaffed facility that members will be able to enter at their leisure through an electronic key card system.  Adam said that he or Krista will be there at least once a day to clean and make sure the equipment is running properly, and will also be available by phone.
The “I” in I-Fit stands for “Isaacs” and plays off of pop-cultures video game Wii-Fit. But make no mistake, I-Fit is the real thing – the assortment of cardio and weight-lifting equipment will meet the particular fitness priorities of all ages and body types.
The facility will house brand-new, high quality equipment. Cardio offerings include: three treadmills, two ellipticals, an upright bike, recumbent bike and a cross trainer. While weightlifting offerings will consist of: six combination weight machines and a large dumbell set, which Adam said will be more than sufficient to provide a full body workout.
During the fall, the Isaacs intend to hold a range of classes, from proper equipment use to nutrition, which will be offered to various ages and skill levels. Adam has 10 years of experience lifting weights while Krista holds a degree in nutrition from South Dakota State. The pair also said they were happy to work with members one-on-one.
The Isaacs will host the grand opening of I-Fit August 20 and 21 providing individuals with a chance to peruse the fitness center, ask questions and sign-up. For the first week they will be offering a grand opening discount that reduces the standard membership down to $26.99 a month. Or “less than a dollar day,” pointed out Adam.
Other membership deals are available to seniors, students, families and couples. Plus, I-Fit has received certification that allows most individuals to use their insurance to get a break on membership fees by generally $20 a month, which would bring the monthly out-of-pocket expense to down to $6.99.
Said Adam, “It’s been fun. we’re excited, I think we’re at the point now where we just want the 20th to come.”
